Nicosound – mp3s from niconico videos

This is pretty amazing – original

Today in Class 5-2 gets a TV series – the manga was only one volume and to my knowledge the OVA covered most of the chapters so I guess we’re getting original episodes.

dunk shoot: Giant Robo

July 21, 2008

Just finished watching the 5th episode of Giant Robo (and I’ll probably knock off the last 2 tonight) and it got me thinking how bizarre the release schedule must have been when it first came out. Pretty much all of the episodes end on a cliffhanger yet there was 6 month+ gap between the releases. As for the show itself it’s been pretty fuckin’ epic and I hear it gets even better towards the end.

Also I found out just now or maybe I wasn’t paying attention at the time (whatever) that a Giant Robo TV series aired actually aired last year: GR-Giant Robo. It looks like there is a larger emphasis on mecha (Giant Robo contrary to its title is more of about martial arts than a mecha) and the trailer looked pretty good but sadly it remains unsubbed (edit:correction the first 2 episodes were subbed).

Champion Joe (Ashita no Joe Movie)

July 19, 2008

In one sentence:

Ashita no Joe is a classic boxing story that follows the main character Joe Yabuki chronicling his triumphs and failures.

Summary (of sorts):

We first meet Joe as a hot headed young street kid who has problems with authority. This soon lands him on the wrong side of the law and it is in prison where he meets his rival Tohru Riikishi. It is through his desire to defeat Riikishi that ultimately brings him towards boxing. While Joe’s self-destructiveness still manifests itself in the ring with his signature no-guard defense and his equally punishing cross-counter it is his unwavering determination that makes him the people’s champion.

The movie takes the 79 episodes of the first season of the series and squeezes it into 152 minutes of viewing so obviously a lot of material was omitted and fast forwarded. For example what was the relationship between the Hayashi family and Riikishi? At times especially early in the film the pace feels unnatural. Nevertheless the film slows down in the later half with better fights and an unforgettable ending.

The DVD release:

Tai Seng’s release is quite bare but I’m just happy that they bringing over some classic releases. Their translation is quite serviceable in terms of the general plot but they do get a lot of the boxing terminology wrong. For example Rikiishi’s uppercut was referred to as a hook and they refer to the bantamweight division as to the lightweight division and so forth but overall it didn’t detract from the viewing experience too much.

Other thoughts:

I thought it was silly/stubborn of Rikiishi to drop from three weight classes (so from welterweight 147 lb to bantamweight 118 lb). Joe obviously wanted the fight to happen so couldn’t he have met him at featherweight?

dunk shoot: Shiori

July 18, 2008

Fans of insanely large breasted plastic figures rejoice (I almost wish I was being ironic but sadly I too fall into this category) as Orchid Seed’s Witchblade Shiori went on sale a couple of days ago. More importantly castoff pictures are up.

edit: THEG has an awesome review up

William Jones – AnimeDraft.net

July 12, 2008

William Jones

Position: Slacker son/ Legacy kid

Strengths: Has nobility that can’t be taught… shows a tremendous motor and second jumpability, showed flashes of it when gifts were refuted… explosive natural charm…fearless with the wallet, it is very possible that he doesn’t have a strong concept of money… aggresive at stalking and will chase maids with reckless abandon… Waltzing skills are top shelf… Very dangerous when motivated…. Has yet scratch surface of potential…. Shows excellent physique and build for a 19th century Englishman, teeth are intact….

Weaknesses: Struggles with old people inside, Mrs. Stowner, his father… Could stand to work on his various nobility responsibilites… His questionable work ethic raises red flags… Needs to expand his offensive repertoire instead of going to the same move…Should continue to work on not getting hit by doors

Those Who Hunt Elves – Primer

July 11, 2008

Those Who Hunt Elves Episode 1
Considering the basis of the plot is to strip elves there is very little fanservice this is particularly apparent when watching it following an an episode of Strike Witches. Ritsuko, voiced by Miyamura Yuko sounded exactly (I’m likely exaggerating here) like Asuka and it didn’t help that she kinda looked like her too (thankfully she was not a bitch). I was also going to point out whether Ritsuko would run out of bullets and whether the tank would run out fuel but then I remembered they spent the episode fighting fishmen. Never mind. Carry on. Otherwise it feels like a very run of the mill ’90s comedy. Arbitrary note: I seem to make up title names as I keep on writing – Those who hunt for elves and Birdy the Mighty Encode.

edit: The whole tank fuel thing is explained a few episodes later.
