HK otaku shopping spots mini guide

January 23, 2009

A good place to start is Sino Centre in Mong Kok where there is a large collection of stores that sell Japanese magazines, artbooks, CDs, figures, plamo, manga (Chinese), games, anime, character goods etc and one shop that sells doujinshi (granted at an inflated price but the shop also takes orders). I recommend getting there before 5pm as it can get really busy and the shop spaces are generally small – ideally get there at around 2-3pm as most of the shops have opened and there’s less people.

For Japanese manga/books/magazines go to Tokyo Do Bookshop in Whampoa Jusco – picked up volumes 2&3 of Shinryaku Ikamusume there for $52.50HKD each – not exactly cheap but they do have a decent sized collection. Surely there are other Japanese bookstores in Hong Kong but that’s the one I know of. There are also lots of random toy stores that sell figures and plamo and my suggestion would be to shop around as prices can vary. From memory there’s an area in Mong Kok that specializes in plamo which I’ll get the address of when I get there.

edit: I’ve found some better guides to save me some time – The FØØL’s Progress has an excellent guide and Project O.T.A.K.U has a comprehensive looking figure shopping guide (which I haven’t read all the way through but it has lots of pictures).

Purple Haze and detatched sleeves

January 21, 2009

Or more like greyish brownish haze though the weather is actually pretty clear today. Anyways I’m in Hong Kong alas I haven’t done anything of note as of yet (mainly seeing relatives, buying things). Actually spent the better part of the morning playing Princess Waltz after watching the Obama inauguration on the news. I did however witness something most disturbing just before which prompted this very stupid post… I saw a man wearing detached sleeves. Thankfully his armpits were well covered and I’m sure he had a very good reason for wearing them but it did make me throw up in my mouth a little bit.

In the spirit of the year of the cow HobbyJapan is once again busy milking the Queen’s Blade series – firstly a comic and original picture calendar which (I think) is only available via HobbyJapan’s shop it’s priced at a cheap 1000yen. Next is the Queens Blade Beautiful Fighter Retsuden [Adventure Record of Nomadic Soldier] – I haven’t really read through it but it tells some sort of story through the book (hardcover) and drama cd but more importantly the book will be penned by my hero Kaneko Hiraku and will likely be worth picking up for the art alone. It is due some time next month (HS sez the 28th) and will priced at 2500yen preorder available at HobbySearch. To celebrate the release you can download the Reina wallpaper between 1/14 to 2/12.

Quick comment on the best eromanga of 2008 as voted by 2channers list – I’d say that Tsundero totally deserved to come on top as its ero content was staggering (still could’ve used more gangbangs the inside of the cover misleading). Shoujo Material was also deserving of its accolades but it could’ve used newer material though there is always his next tankubon. I think that while Naruko Hanaharu is a better artist Takeda Hiromitsu is the better ero artist or it could be just that he caters to my fetishes better. Off the top of my head I’d say Inumimi Zukan – which had great art, funny stories and just enough ero content would have been at the top my list last year but then again there are so many ero manga releases in a year. Finally I’d like to see Bosshi drawing more futanari manga in 2009 (geez the stuff he does now is tame compared to his earlier works).

A Yuzuhara Haruka figure! and what looks to be a very nice one at that. Yes milf characters are superior to their offspring. *side note: why is Kotobukiya’s blog powered by National Geographic?

dunk shoot: ‘from here to hong kong

January 14, 2009

Going to Hong Kong on Sunday, haven’t been back for a couple of years so it should be good. Hopefully I’ll be able to retain some semi-regular updates and who knows maybe some original-ish content.

planning on picking up:

Shinryaku Ika Musume Vol3 and vol 2 if possible though its likely out of print

Wani magazine’s Gelatin due out February 4 - a new preview/promo pic featuring Naruko Hanaharu is up

and if possible

Nishieda’s Dendrobium

Takamichi Love Works

and then a hovering castle

From memory figure prices in HK are quite reasonable (sometimes cheaper than their Japanese counterparts) and understandably Chinese manga is much cheaper than Japanese manga while artbooks incur a markup.

As of late I’ve been kept fairly busy between work and P4. As for the Winter shows all I’ve seen is Minamike Okaeri (which so far feels much improved from Okawari). I scrolled through Aroduc’s Winter posts and nothing seems particularly exciting. (For some reason I only ever seem to blog late at night so if all of this is unreadable I do apologise).

Buckethead rocks, what with the bucket and the head and awesome guitar skills to boot – so thank you BDL
