New Discipline anime

Ero (18+)

Getchu have put a new product page for Discipline Zero first volume no details so far only that it will again be done by WhiteBear and will be released 12/18 at 7,140 yen (incl tax). I can’t imagine Sei Shoujo will be on board being after the first adaption that turned the series into a comedy. It could have something to do with Discipline LS which I know nothing about or maybe more original silliness. On a side note I’ve finally ordered Discipline the Record of a Crusade which led to this post.

Nichijou is being translated

Nichijou is being translated by the good folks at Musashi Quality. I for one can’t wait till they get to the later chapters – I still have no idea what those spirals things are. Thanks to desudesu (18+) for the heads up. Also volume 5 goes on sale 10/25. On a side note does anyone know of a good online shop to import manga? – Yesasia is okay but I don’t like having to pay the same for Japanese releases as western releases.

STARLESS site has been updated!

Apparently Starless is supposedly coming out this year though I wouldn’t hold them on that. Still the fact the site has updated twice in the last two months is encouraging given the last news came in December of 2008. To recap they’ve updated the top page image with what will be the cover package and added 9 new preview CGs.

Dream Club Anthology – kinda want this – color pages by KEI, Shouji Sato (Inazuma), Kirihara Izumi is kinda a strange choice but as with all these anthologies I’m not real familiar with the mangaka doing the actual comics – I imagine 1/4 of will be very good with the rest ranging from average to crappy

Started reading Faust – xxxHolic: anotherholic was most intersting when Nisiosin was being Nisiosin

Also started playing Mana Khemia 2 – somehow still getting quite a bit of mileage out my ps2

With my backlog as huge as it is not watching any of the new autumn shows looks like a distinct possibility (except for Sunred of course)

I’ve somehow nearly caught up to the Japanese broadcast of Gintama (only 8 more episodes!)

Ino drawing tutorial at ASCII (line art part) – somehow this becomes this

Usatarou draws Kai from Bastard!! and writes about the process of drawing and how long it takes (might have a go at poorly translating it later)* – also (18+) futa Maria from Kochikame according to wikipedia she is actually a guy (magically) turned girl so it makes sense

* note because a foreigner (“From a Foreigner’s Perspective,You’re the Foreigner. From an Alien’s perspective, You’re the Alien”) asked him about it its written fairly simply. That said my Japanese is horrible but as I have an assignment that I don’t feel like doing due soon I’ll try and translate it anyway. Apologies for any mistakes and feel free to correct me if I’m horribly wrong.

Rough

Time 1 hour

Decide what to draw as deciding on the pose and the composition takes the longest. (Before I get to this stage I redraw it over and over. Often times it eventually ends with a cliched composition…)

Trace

Time 20 minutes

Trace through the rough copy. I’ll ad-lib a little rather than just following the rough copy. (I’ll sometimes even make corrections during the painting stage, thats how much effort I try to put into it(?).)

Paint (base)

Time 20 minutes

Add the base color to the rough copy. I’ll make changes while to the rough copy while painting. (In this case I corrected the line for the bangs and chin.) Deciding on the color adjustments afterwards is done fairly randomly(?).

Paint (shadow)

Time 30 minutes

Put shadows over the base color. Where I put the shadows is all improvised. While I’m at it I draw the eyes. The eyes are the characters deciding factor so its drawn with emphasis. (When I’m getting tired I put on a movie while I’m drawing (?). I think the new 007 lacks sex appeal…)

Paint (highlight)

Time 30 minutes

Now that the shadows been added I’ll add the highlights. The right way to do it is to have the highlights follow the direction of the shadow and background but this time there is no background I’ll just draw it randomly. The reflected light (???)

Pain (BG)

Time 30 minutes

The finishing touch is to paint the background. This time I’ll just do something simple. There are times when other things take longer than the person (?). While I’m at it I adjust color of the background and person all together.

I generally draw it in about 3 hours. Whether there should be a penis in this situation also takes time to deal with. The most important is to have fun while drawing so you don’t tired of working.

Still I’d rather watch it over the King of Fighters live action movie. At least they got the uniforms right.

Yotsuba& v6

Not much to say about the content Yotsubato is always brilliant. As for the Yen press release at first I felt there were too many different fonts but its sorta growing on me. When Yotsuba speaks loudly/excitedly it changes to another font which I don’t mind though they could have just made the text bold but also there are other parts where the font changes where the reasons aren’t quite clear. Unlike the ADV release though my fingerprints don’t stick on to the cover which is a plus. Interestingly enough they translate the sound effects to both Japanese and english which is great for weeaboos like me but I can’t imagine it’d be useful to any other target market. Its a really nice release font nit picking aside.

Black Jack v2

I actually liked the stories in this volume better than the first but oddly enough the first time I read through it the chapters felt like they ended abruptly but it might have just been that I wanted to read about more about it. The feeling has diminished upon subsequent rereading. Also I wonder why Black Jack charges astronomical fees is it pride that he is the best or is it testing people to see what they value? He often shows that money isn’t particularly important to him compared to saving someones life. My guess would be that its somewhere in between he charges rich people a high amount because they can pay it and ordinary folk to test them. All in all its a characteristic that adds to his mystique.

SS Astro v1

Spats banzai! I actually wanted to read before of it was released in english …mainly because of the cover. The story is nonexistent and the characters (as per most 4koma mangas) aren’t particularly deep but as a light read its quite enjoyable. I would’ve like to have seen more interaction with the students it does get points for light yuri though (I really should get around to watching Saki). Why is Karasuma a backup teacher when she’s more senior than Maki?

Suzuka Complete Collection for $17

I’m tempted to pick it up and watch it along side the Sea Slugs archives for nostalgia. Ah the crappy production values, ah the Yamato getting slapped repeatedly, ah the high levels of unintentional comedy.

Take on Me by Takemura Sesshu was one of the bigger ero manga releases of 2004 and was brought over for english release last year by Mangaerotica as Domin-8 Me.
